  • More kids are getting diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension which were only previously seen in adults. This why First Lady Michelle Obama addresses the obesity issue among today’s children through a program called the Let’s Move Campaign.

  • In other weight-related issues, in a study comparing overly obese teens who underwent gastric banding with overly obese teens who underwent lifestyle changes, 84% of the gastric banding group achieved weight loss of more than 50%. (Which means, if things go really bad when it comes to weight, then banding could be your answer).

  • Crestor (Rosuvastatin) has been approved by FDA to be safe to take by people with no heart disease or without high cholesterol. Crestor and other statin drugs work to lower LDL, the so-called bad cholesterol in our bodies.

  • You’ve heard of second-hand smoking, but have you heard of third-hand smoking? A new study reveals that when nicotine residues that linger on surfaces (for days, weeks or months) react with ambient nitrous acid in the air, potent carcinogens can form. That is third-hand smoking.

  • It’s been years since a Mediterranean diet has been recognized to be beneficial in heart problems and dietary concerns. This diet focuses heavily on fruit, nut, whole grain and olive oil. But a new study also shows that it may be able to reduce the strokes and ultimately dementia. The study will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology Meeting in Toronto. (In other words, while this study shows much promise, they also cannot wholly attribute the Mediterranean diet as responsible for reduction in strokes. At least not yet).
